Indian Ropeman - Elephantsound

Label: Skint Records
Catalog#: BRASSIC 14CD
Format: CD
Country: UK
Released: 1999
Genre: Electronic
Style: Breakbeat, Dub, Trip Hop, Big Beat

1 Chairman Of The Board (3:11)
2 I.R.M. (5:08)
3 Stand Clear (5:48)
4 Sunshine Of Your Love (5:23)
5 Do Not Deviate From Your Present Course (3:10)
6 Your Own Enemy (6:56)
7 66 Meters (9:02)
8 Dog In The Piano (Pub Rok Mix) (5:41)
9 Mission To The Moog Pt.I (3:35)
10 Dominant Tonic (6:05)
11 Mission To The Moog Pt.Ii (5:15)

Citat :
Elephantsound is essentially a breakbeat/dub album of high quality. What sets it apart from the rest of the breakbeat morass is the mix of 60's psychedelic influences (Moog keyboards feature on a number of tracks) and the use of Indian musical instruments / samples, perticularly percussion.Furthermore, the track styles are quite varied - slow-tempo stoners (Mission To The Moog), vocal dance (66 Meters, Dog In The Piano) and outright madness (an acid breakbeat cover of Sunshine Of Your Love, originally by Cream).Whilst this may sound bizzarre, the end product is a bouncy, fun album which can easily withstand repeated listening thanks to the depth and quality of the music.

Citat :
What I found when I first listened to it was probably one of the greatest collection of breakbeat ever known, and I'm serious!! Lawgiverz mixes through so many tracks (46 to be precise) in this mix and puts out some of the greatest tracks to date in breakbeat... some of which Im still struggling to find on single.

Then to add to all the 46 track mayhem, which also has its chilled moments by the way, you also have some ear pleasing scratching too, which is pretty cool and funky. The only thing that I would warn you about is the fact that the CD is split into the 6 sections by 6 tracks, so fast forwarding to some of the monster tracks that stand out might be a bit of a pain! Other than that, this has to be one of the greatest CDs to hit my breakbeat collection... such a crazy quickfiring mix...!

One more thing... the intro, a dubbed speech from George Bush, excellent Smile

Old vs new music with a very strange twist. Just when you think it is going one way it takes a new direction, very unpridicable which of corse has drawbacks but it quickly brings you back, and it takes you on a journy (much like life it is both good/bad/ugly and beautiful, but leaves you almost spellbound! You don't know why you like it, but you just do! Including a fantastic political message

6 Bombay Nights (Sub Mix) (8:15)
7 Barrel Of Gain (8:30)
8 Makelovenotwar (7:58)
9 Funkytown 2003 (8:02)

Citat :
The album is a complete journey with great diversity and blending of different music styles in unique fashion that will leave no listener untouched. The journey starts off with an irresistible funky classic "i can't wait": wah guitars and James Brown grooves ... passing through to an ironic funky goa cliche ("old vibes, new money?") until it reaches the full-on morning climax with "thx (decoder mix)".. then another general favorite morning tune follows to chill out the energy, "telekinetic hammo player" is extra groovy and hammond organ dominated... the trip goes on driving deeply into a darker side of the loopus world: "papoola" is more minimal and techno-orientated bringing forward dark and cold astral images. "Bombay night" as the title says is a journey into a long indian night: full of etnical suggestions and a crazy finale, urban and hip hop all blending superbly together.. with a deeper and darker mood we embark onto the "barrel of gain" track, a full-on punkrock 80's track with hidden secret samples from depeche mode (don't tell them!)..."makelovenotwar" is loopus evergreen motto for the new millenium and finally "funkytown 2003" is the new mix of the infamous track with a breeze of funky joy...

Awesome inventive album that is certainly a dance music classic & one of the best albums of the 90s. Just have to say a word about the track Rodney Yates which is an absolutely fanatstic piece of future funk, which has the most amazing funky zylophone which is a certain head nodder, foot tapper & all round groover - never fails to please & is just a brilliant classic...

...jungle with high pipe whistles and progressive organic rhythms...toneless beats, muted trumpets, and high electro-chords...tribal techno...robotic wheezes...not many albums produced have such an eclectic range of music...there are two kinds of people in this world, first who own Leftism and second who don't own Leftism...This album combines exceptional, interesting, stylistically disparate tunes, luscious electronic orchestration, unrelenting drive and an uncanny sense of artistic unity..."Release the Pressure" is a great album-starter, while "Afro-Left"'s African influence makes for a unique techno romp. "Song of Life" is one of the most original techno songs with the first half soothing and ambient before yielding to a pounding beat. "Original" is awesome trip-hop that must rank as one of the best vocal-oriented techno songs ever. "Black Flute/Space Shanty" is a teeny-tad more standard techno than the rest of this album, but it works perfectly. "Storm 3000" is excellent instrumental, and "Open Up" is great vocally...no CD collection is complete without this album...The ingredients are put together with a masterly finesse - bass and drums mainlined straight into the bloodstream while the fantastically diverse textures and melodies infect the brain like a recurring dream...

Citat :
Combining hypercharged political rants with heavyweight breakbeats and wondrous Indian instrumentation, Asian Dub Foundation are socially aware commentators who simply defy categorization. Taking a cue from maverick groups like Public Enemy and Rage Against the Machine, they match jackhammer rhythms and furious rapping on "Dub Mentality," while "Buzzin'" employs elements as disparate as sitars, dub bass lines, and indie-rock-guitar distortion...It mixes up ragga, drum'n'bass, rock, hiphop and Asian folk music into an original, massively energetic, ultra funky and utterly captivating record. And of course the progressive, conscious lyrics make this an album that's as valuable socially as it is musically....it bristles with post-colonial anger and anti-imperialist polemics, referencing a Bengali peasant revolt, a Punjabi political assassin and Satpal Ram (a Birmingham man imprisoned for self-defense against racist attackers)...

Citat :
Community Music, Asian Dub Foundation's third album, wastes no time in establishing their agenda. From the opening splash of atonal guitar and bubbling analogue synths "Real Great Britain" sets out a formidable futurist manifesto....The combination of traditional Indian riffs with drum n' bass and some massive beats sounds absolutely excellent and makes the album a really exciting, energetic and uplifting listen...As much musically innovative as they are politically active, Asian Dub Foundation's sound is a melting pot of jungly breakbeats, dub and dancehall flavors, and snaky guitar lines that morph from rock riffs into Indian sitars and back again, every element of which manages to stand out in the mix as often as it complements the others. Where Zack de la Rocha hisses and screams, Deedar sports a mush-mouthed dancehall phrasing that sounds at once laid-back and urgent; Chandrasonic is as adept a guitar technician as Tom Morello, deploying riffs that sear and snake or disappearing into clouds of delay noise. And instead of bleak teeth-gnashing and finger-pointing at The Man, Asian Dub Foundation sport a particularly positivist, unity-building vibe that in the hands of lesser artists would become peace-and-love sappiness or multicultural-studies didacticism, but the band makes sure to keep the edges rough while still making protest seem like celebration...Asian Dub Foundation maintains the delicate balance between raising consciousness and shaking booty; the message never gets preachy, and the music can certainly stand well on its own, as it does on the instrumental coda "Scaling New Heights." Community Music is incredibly ambitious, and amazingly, it delivers everything it promises. It's a revolution, and you can dance to it.

Citat :
...the real dancefloor-friendly joints, such as "Furlong",
"Donut", "Oversteer" and "Tug Of War", really will tear up any
dancefloor that likes it's breaks. Real monsterous tuneage. And then
you've got some more chilled stuff like "Minimal Thoughts Of Reason"
and "End Of Make Believe". And then you have incredible experimental
hip hop like "Pins And Needles" and "Tip Hop". And wibbly electro stuff
like "Subalicious". And the after-hours breaks of "Oblong" and "On A
Limb". And funky salsa breakbeat mayhem in the shape of "Sable Taco".
All the tracks are of the type that try something new, while still
retaining the trademark Fuel ultra-low bass. ...

Citat :
ISDN is not just a high-speed internet connection, it’s a compilation
of live recordings that the Future Sound of London did, merged
seamlessly into one another. It’s futuristic in the best way possible
with sounds and textures and sonic images floating in and out of
cyberspace. There’s the super-futuristic jazz of “The Far Out Son of
Lung and the Ramblings of a Madman” (led in by a sample from Aliens)
and “Smokin’ Japanese Babe.” “Slider” is as dark funk as any I’ve
heard, while “Eyes Pop – Skin Explodes – Everyone Dead” sounds like
electronic Baroque music. “Tired” starting with a delicate guitar
before going into some chugging beats, then some icy synths. That’s
what’s so wonderful about this album: it’s a journey in the best sense,
with new things to hear and see around every corner. “Egypt” goes for
ethnic electro, while “A Study of Six Guitars” has the guitars,
definitely, but also some industrial percussion too. Plug in to ISDN
today...This album, with its esoteric artwork and sleeve notes and track titles
that explain so little, is often looked at the outcast of the FSOL
catalogue. A lot of people say that this album is "creepy", or "evil",
or that there is very little musically to grab onto (in stark contrast
to their early work). I personally feel, however, that ISDN is the
pinnacle of their work: a complete vision of the new and flavorful
patchwork that these two guys wanted to bring at the height of their
career. No one song on this album jumps out at you and grabs you,
instead the album just slinks by in a flurry of bizarre vocal snippets,
jagged drum loops, keyboard splotches, guitar stabs, muted horns and
unsettling moments of clattering ambience. However, with repeated
listens I find that this album really molds itself around you and
demonstrates a stunning breadth of skill. "Smokin' Japanese Babe" holds
up a broken mirror to Portishead and Massive Attack, "It's My Mind That
Works" and "Dirty Shadows" walk a finer line than any track on the
"Lifeforms" album, and tracks like "Kai" and "The Far Out Son..."
interlock wildly disparate parts into a kind of gritty future hip-hop.
All the tracks work splendidly together, and the best ones stand on
their own as true gems of improvisation. Truly essential listening for
people who want to know how far electronic music can really stretch
itself.

Citat :
Forget two-step, jump-up or U.K. garage, the real sound of the
underground is the synapse-shredding pulse of nu-skool breaks. Melding
hip-hop, electro and drum and bass into a bass-heavy amalgam, this
melting pot of styles takes breakbeat as its common starting point and
then deconstructs it, along with all expectations. Skillfully mixed and
compiled by the undisputed king of the genre, Adam Freeland, Tectonics
is the world-class DJ's homage to all things nu-skool, and it kicks
like the proverbial mule. Blim's "Chronologic" quickly sets the pace, a
gentle, tickling intro giving way to gilded breaks and bass as fat as
butter. Further down the line, Apex's "Bangin" growls away like a
famished panther, its anger and discontent mirrored by deep bottom end.
Jewel in the crown, though, is Beber's "Juvenile Delinquent," the tune
that almost singlehandedly kick-started the genre. Like all the
culprits here, it's a malevolent beauty with fire in its belly.
